Deer Valley

Weather

Heavy snow flurries most of the day.

Conditions

12" fresh snow overnight. Even the groomed runs has several inches of fresh powder on top of the surface. The ungroomed runs had between 9 and 12" of powder and on mogul runs most of the dips were filled in.

The Story of the Day

Staying down in Salt Lake City, we woke to heavy snow and this reduced the options for skiing. Both of the Cottonwood Canyons needed chains, which we did not have and it didn't look as if conditions would improve.

We settled on Deer Valley and even the drive up the interstate to get there was difficult because of the snow. Get there we did, in good time and were ready to go before the lifts opened.

The conditions were what the Americans would call "awsome". There was fresh light powder everywhere. The grooming machines worked hard, but it really was difficult to do anywhere without getting into at least a few inches of snow; off the groomed runs, the snow was knee deep.

This had the effect of levelling the difficulty of skiing. The greens and blue were definitely more difficult than usual, but the blacks were much more forgiving.

We covered most of the mountain until driving snow really set in and Chris had some problems with his boots.
